Labor’s Jen Butler used her time in parliament on Thursday to bring up a past driving error by Tasmania’s police minister Felix Ellis.
Felix Ellis was caught driving 13 kilometres over the speed limit on Forth Road while unlicensed in 2015, receiving demerit points and a fine.
She suggested his behaviour amounted to hooning, given his “fierce” public stance on road safety – a claim Ellis rejected.
“More than 10 years ago, when I moved to Tasmania as a young plumber, I didn’t realise you needed to transfer licences when you moved interstate,” said Mr Ellis on his Facebook page.
“Well, as we often do when we’re in our 20s, I found out the hard way- when pulled over for doing about 10ks over the limit on my way home.
“It was a stupid mistake, and I’m certainly not proud of it.
“But I paid the fine and moved on with my life.
“Today was the third time I can recall it being raised publicly, each time as a result of Labor’s pushing.”
Mr Ellis is just one Tasmanian MP’s with driving offences with Braddon independent MP Craig Garland being disqualified from driving last month for six months after pleading guilty to a drug driving charge from November last year.
