The Australian meat pie has a history intertwined with the nation’s own evolution, from being a simple, portable meal brought by British settlers to a beloved national icon. It’s a dish that started with the first settlers in the 18th century and evolved over time, becoming a staple in Australian culture.

One of the best things about a meat pie is that they can be eaten any time of the day or night. No one questions if you are having a pie for breakfast, it is just an Aussie thing to eat. A bit of tomato sauce is best, but that will surely be controversial.

Pies come in all shapes, sizes, flavours and prices but one thing that a pie must be, is delicious. And lucky for those in the North West because you can get these pies in two locations.

McCarthy’s Bread Lounge in Ulverstone and Upper Burnie has some of the best pies going and we checked both locations to be sure the quality was the same.

Tackling a few different filling types, the chunky steak was the standout. The steam coming up in front of your eyes as the first bite cracks open the pastry to have the filling rush to the back of your mouth hitting all the taste buds on the way. Sensational.

The thing a standout pie needs is a quality crust, well blended flavour, holdabilty and a bite that makes you want more.

McCarthy’s Bread Lounge sure has this as the top of the crust is flaky while the sides and base are firm yet tender. The filling is slightly on the wet side, however the pie holds together, the meat is tender, and the gravy is full of flavour. It holds its form when served.

McCarthy’s has been around for four years and in 2024 they won gold, silver and bronze for several of their pastries in Australia’s best Pie and Pastie competition against 367 bakeries across Australia.

They also offer your typical bakery products and you dine in or grab the food to go.

It is no wonder that McCarthy’s Bread Lounge has won awards as their pies are top notch and are well worth hanging a fang in one.
