From today, 1 July 2025, the City of Devonport CBD is a step closer to a safer, more accessible, and people-friendly city centre as the speed limits have been reduced to 40km/h.
Traffic monitoring indicates that most vehicles already travel between 35–45km/h, meaning the change will have minimal impact on travel times while offering major safety improvements.
Why 40km/h?
– A crash at 40km/h is three times less likely to be fatal than at 50km/h.
– Lower speeds give drivers more time to react and reduce stopping distances.
– It’s the simplest, most cost-effective way to improve road safety.

The streets the new speed limits will apply are Rooke Street, King Street, Edward Street and parts of Stewart, Fenton, Best and Oldaker Streets.
New speed signs have been installed are active from today.
